Have you ever found yourself doom scrolling, so overwhelmed by everyone else’s seemingly perfect homes, but you feel stuck when it comes to your own space? You’re not alone. Decision paralysis is a common challenge that many of my clients face and I’ve identified five common mistakes that often lead to this state of indecision, along with some handy tips on how to sidestep them.
Rushing the Process
One of the biggest mistakes people make when designing their space is rushing the process. It’s easy to get excited and want to see your vision come to life quickly, but rushing can lead to hasty decisions that you may regret later. Instead, take your time to define what matters most to you and let each decision be a reflection of where those priorities fall on your list. Whether it’s functionality, budget, or aesthetic appeal, having a clear set of priorities can help you narrow down your choices and make decisions with greater ease.
Not Seeking Inspiration
The second mistake I see goes hand in hand with rushing the process and that’s not seeking or analyzing your inspiration. Inspiration is everywhere, from magazines to social media to nature. While it can sometimes be overwhelming, it can also help bridge a communication gap. Often it can be hard to verbalize a vision, so having a visual to reference can be very helpful. I encourage my clients to take the time to explore different sources of inspiration and identify one to three specific things that they like about it. This simple exercise allows you to see recurring themes in what you are drawn to. You’ll be surprised at how much easier it is to make decisions when you have a clear vision in mind.
focusing too much on trends
Following trends can easily sneak up on us. In a world where we are constantly bombarded with what is current, it’s easy to mistake that influence as our personal taste. While it’s fun to incorporate the latest trends into our homes, what’s considered trendy today may be outdated tomorrow, making it challenging to commit to a particular style or design direction. The thing is that authentic personal styles are timeless. I encourage all of my clients to really dive into what they have always gravitated to, while it may have evolved over time there is usually a common thread. So instead of chasing trends, focus on what you love, what makes you feel comfortable, and is a true representation of your personal style and values, allowing you to create a space that feels authentic and enduring.
overcomplicating things
Sometimes, we tend to make things more complex than they need to be. Whether it’s choosing between paint colors or furniture styles, overthinking can quickly lead to a state of inaction. Remember, simplicity is key! Break down the decision into smaller, more manageable steps, and focus on what truly matters. For example, if you are choosing between two items and staying within a budget is your top priority, choose the item that offers the best value (sidenote: less expensive does not always equal the best value). Or if you are on a specific timeline, choosing the item that is more readily available will help meet your goals and make the decision easier. You can even approach your design with a less is more mentality. Trying to achieve a look that is overcomplicated can lead to frustration and staying stuck. Instead, try to simplify your design by focusing on a few key pieces that make a statement. This will not only make the decision-making process easier but also create a more cohesive and balanced look.
Seeking perfection
Perfectionism can be a major roadblock on the path to decision-making. We get so caught up in trying to find the flawless solution that we end up paralyzed by the fear of falling short. It’s a powerful force that can hold us back from taking any action at all. But here’s the truth: there’s no such thing as a perfect decision. Instead of aiming for perfection, strive for excellence. Set realistic expectations, trust your instincts, and give yourself permission to make mistakes along the way. Remember that even if things don’t go as planned, you’ll still end up with something better than if you did nothing at all. Imperfections can be far more interesting and relatable anyway.
In a world where social media often showcases seemingly perfect homes, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and stuck when it comes to your own space. By recognizing and avoiding these five common mistakes, you can navigate the design process with greater ease and confidence. Remember, your home should be a reflection of your unique style and values, so take your time, trust your instincts, and enjoy the journey of creating a space that truly feels like home.
